Obituary for Cynthia S. Leutze (Sowers)

Cynthia S. Leutze, 81, formerly of Leesport, a resident at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Masonic Village. She was the wife of the late Jerry W. Leutze, who died March 21, 2020. Jerry and Cynthia were married April 19, 1963, and celebrated 58 years of marriage at the time of his death.

Born in South Williamsport, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles Emerson Sowers and Mildred Lucille (Weigel) Sowers. She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1959; and later received an associate's degree in education from Mansfield University. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Leesport. Cynthia worked as a teachers assistant for 15 years at BCIU, retiring in 1993. During that time she served as a member of the Board of Directors for the union. She was a member of Reading Chapter #251 Order of Eastern Star, and served as Matron in 1991-1992 and 2002-2003. She enjoyed sewing, and reading. She was a member of Women of the Church at the former St. Timothy's Church; and was a member of church council at Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. She was also a former Sunday school teacher, teaching nursery to junior high school age children. While at Masonic Village, she was a dedicated liaison between the community members and the Board, voicing concerns of the residents.

She is survived by a son: Egon C. husband of Joey N. (Benne) Leutze, Tilden Twp.; two daughters: Lorna R. (Leutze), wife of Roy A. Oswalt, Perry Twp., and Stacy L. Leutze, Hamburg; four grandchildren: Neil J. Oswalt, Gunnar C., Carlee N., and Emerson W. Leutze. She is also survived by a brother-in-law: Roland C. Leutze, husband of Yolanda, El Paso, TX; five nieces and one nephew. She was predeceased by two brothers: C. Herbert Sowers, and Kenneth E. Sowers, and a nephew.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 10, 2023 at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street Leesport. Burial will follow in Leesport Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 10:45 am in the funeral home. An Order of Eastern Star service will be held at 10:45 am.
