Obituary for Charles N. Berger

Charles N. Berger, 82, of Leesport, passed away Friday, May 26, 2023 in Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the husband of Deborah Ann (Pray) Berger. They were married May 5, 1962 and celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Charles L. and Dorothea I. (Greenawald) Berger. He graduated from Schuylkill Valley High School in 1958. Charles was a member of Bethany E.C. Church, Leesport. Charles worked at WT Grant, he sold life insurance for Colonial Life; and later People Life Insurance; and spent approximately 20 years working as a salesman and later a manager at PA Wine and Liquors, until retirement. Throughout his career, he worked part time on the truck with Kauffman's Chicken BBQ. Charles was a Leesport Borough Councilman from January 5, 1975 until May 2021, when he became the Mayor of Leesport. He was a member of Sewer Authority since 2014; and was a Leesport Borough Representative to the Northern Berks Police Department Commission. He was a life member of the Union Fire Company No. 1 of Leesport; and was a member of the former Leesport Jaycees. He enjoyed genealogy, especially when working on the Berger family tree; traveling to New Hampshire to the cabin, the Phillies, NASCAR, and the three major horse races.

He is survived by three sons: Charles F. Berger, companion of Terri Smith, Leesport, James E. Berger, husband of Kim (Sunday), Bern Twp., and Matthew G. Berger, husband of Deanne (Albright), Centre Twp.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister: Noreen (Berger) Mayer, Fleetwood. Charles was predeceased by a sister: Carolyn (Berger) Brodbeck.

Memorial services will be held, Tomorrow evening, Friday, June 2, 2023 at 7:00 pm from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street Leesport. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to: Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church; 308 Main Street Leesport, PA 19533.
