Obituary for Carl W. Richie

Carl W. Richie, 86, of
Shoemakersville, passed away at
Reading Hospital on Thursday,
February 4, after a long battle with
congestive heart failure.

Born January 23, 1935 in Shamokin, PA, he was the
son of the late Elwood and Martha
Richie. Carl had been a resident at
Maidencreek Place since October and
the family would like to thank the entire staff at
Maidencreek Place for the wonderful care provided
during a very difficult time.

Carl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sonja Richie
and his three sons, Bill (Karen) of Mechanicsburg,
PA; Bob (Wanda) of Landisville, PA; and Frank (Dee)
of Dumfries, VA. Also surviving are grandchildren,
Jennifer Smith, Brad Richie, Christopher Greenawalt,
Amanda Miller, and Bryan Richie; and great-
grandchildren, Lily, Becky, Carter, Charlotte, and Cameron.

Carl grew up in Sunnyside, just outside of
Shamokin, and spent a vast amount of his time
playing baseball and football, in numerous summer
baseball leagues as well as for Shamokin High
School, where he graduated in 1952. He then
attended Bloomsburg State Teachers College and
earned his BS in math education. He spent 37 years
teaching high school mathematics, all but two of
those years at Muhlenberg High School. In addition
to his teaching duties, Carl also coached football and
baseball for the Muhlenberg Mules.

As was customary for his generation, Carl was
involved in numerous community organizations.
He was a former member of the Shoemakersville
Jaycees, a former member of Shoemakersville
Borough Council, he served as the Mayor of
Shoemakersville from 1982 - 1994, and he served as
a Webelos Leader for Cub Scout Pack 133. He also
volunteered many years as the head coach for the
Shoemakersville Little League baseball team, he was
head coach for the Hamburg Hawks Midget Football
team, he served as assistant junior high wrestling
coach at Hamburg, and he was a long time Berks
County baseball umpire, umpiring in hundreds of
games over his long career as an umpire.

In his spare time, Carl was an avid hunter and
fisherman. Nothing was more enjoyable than the
time he spent at the cottage on the lake in Ontario,
Canada. After retiring, Sonja and Carl spent many
summer months relaxing and fishing at the cottage.
Most important to Carl, though, was his family. He
was so incredibly proud of his three boys and loved
the grandchildren and great-grandchildren very
much. He enjoyed hearing stories and spending time
with them all.

Services for Carl will be private and a family
celebration will take place at a later time. Memorial
contributions in Carl’s name can be made to Zion’s
Church, 770 Zion’s Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526.
